It’s time to starting thinking about your new "life
after retirement." What will you do with all that free time? Where will
you live? Will you have to keep working? Will you get more involved with your community? Will you seek to have a closer relationship
with friends and family?
A FEW TIPS:
.
Exercise Your Mind: Every day, take a half hour or so for some games that will exercise your mind. Number games seem
to really do the trick, like Sudoku. Word games are also helpful and fun. Write poetry.

Engage in a project that is fulfilling: There are two options. Continue work for pay or volunteer. Get involved in politics or philanthropic
ventures. It gives retirees a reason to get up in the morning, a purpose so to speak and will help you maximize retirement
life.
.
Practice financial maturity : Control and manage your spending
even after retirement. Make a budget and live within it. This will reduce anxiety. If you don’t have enough retirement
money for those little extras, get a part time job. more
Build on your relationship:
Now is the time to rekindle your relationship with your partner. Healthy relationships and senior sex are still an
important ingredient in a fulfilling retirement life. Find activities, new friends, and hobbies you can enjoy together.
Read a book together, take a class together, join a club together…and do a few things on your own too. That way you’ll
have plenty to talk about when you come together in the evening.
.
Find and Build new relationships-: Create
new friends and stay connected with old friends via email and the phone if they are too far away to visit. It is the best
way to fight loneliness and depression. Look for people that have some of the same interests you have by joining clubs. This
is especially easy if you live in a retirement community with amenities like golf, swimming pools, tennis, pickle ball, recreation
centers, clubs etc. If you don’t live in one of those communities, find a senior center in your area with plenty of
things for you to become involved in after retirement.
Maintain family relationships: We
live in different times now and many of us do not live near family either because we had to move to a more affordable state,
or because our family moved for career and job relocations. Whatever the reason we have some ideas to keep you connected with
grandkids and other family members. .
Maintain
an active lifestyle: In order to get the most out of your retirement lifestyle you have
to stay physically active through age appropriate and health appropriate sports. Walk, ride a bike, play golf or any
other sports you played or always wanted to learn. Many retirees are limited in what they can do but don't let it be an excuse
not to participate in life. There are exercises you can do even if you can't walk, or walk well. I know it sounds hard, but
there are ways to enjoy life if you are handicapped. Even going outside for fresh air is helpful. Look around and watch a
bird hunt for food. Talk to neighbors who pass by. Plant tomatoes in a planter. Watch them grow and enjoy the fruits
of your labor!
.
Continue personal and spiritual development: Take a class in something you’ve always wanted
to learn. Search where to volunteer on the internet. Get involved with your community or church. Look into something
'new age' if you don't like formal religions. Spirituality has been shown to enhance life.
