POPULAR TRENDS ARE KEEPING SENIORS ENGAGED AND LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

Senior trends. Retirees are refusing to be defined by their age today. So, how do popular trends impact life after retirement? The answers may shock you, encourage you, tempt you.

BRAIN GAMES

Losing mental abilities is one of the top fears for seniors. During ICAA’s recent Active Aging Week, the lectures on brain health, word games and memory trivia were the most popular, making the senior trend of exercising the brain very popular.

PASSTIMES- NEW TRENDS

Seniors are no longer sedentary. One woman over 50 said that retirement life today "Isn't sitting around knitting baby blankets." And she's right. Seniors today don't sit on the front porch in rocking chairs watching life go by, waiting to die. They are grabbing life by the horns and living life to the fullest as you will find on this page.

 TECHNOLOGY IN THE HOME

Advanced technology is making life easier for older or physically challenged seniors in their homes. Apartments and homes are being transformed into “smart houses” where lights can be turned on, drapes drawn and water temperature controlled – all with the touch of a button making this senior trend very popular.

 Age-friendly Fitness.

Retirees are trending towards keeping physically active because it is shown to reduce their risk of chronic diseases and helps them maintain their ability to continue daily activities.

The trend is to retire in communities that offer plenty of choices on staying active. what to do after retirement

Seniors tell us that they "refuse to be defined by their age." And they are taking exercise seriously.

Were you aware that there is a Senior Olympics?  A woman recently broke the  "Vaulting"  record in track and field, a sport she did as a younger woman and took it up again in her late forties, and another woman in her seventies won her first bike race.

Seniors who don't live in active 55+ communities that offer age-friendly fitness opportunities are also well aware of the benefits of exercise and are on the hunt for gyms in their area.

The owners of the new wave of gyms and wellness centers aimed at people over 50 years are also riding this new senior trend.

Retirement Communities that are Outside the Box

While most seniors are choosing retirement life based on medical facilities, cultural amenities, shopping, low crime rate and cost of living, some seniors are exploring what many think are shocking senior trends by vacationing and even moving into nudist colonies.

Back to School

A growing trend for seniors and baby boomers is furthering their education by going back to college—and they are not just going back to school during the day, they are living on campus.

 Retirement Community Trends.

Golf is no longer the top requirement new retirees are looking for. Instead, the newest senior trend in housing is the proximity to theaters, restaurants bars and clubs, gyms, clubs like hiking, travel and wine tastings.

"There is a decided growth in interest in purchasing age-qualified housing targeted to people 50 years and older, says the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry, citing their recent study showing that 37% of households preferred or were willing to consider age-qualified housing."

The trend is also turning to multigenerational developments with many seniors where young families live in one section and older adults in another. And many seniors are choosing to continue to live in places close to family and friends instead of opting for that warm beach retirement life.

Tech Savvy Seniors

As surprising as it might seem to some, the seniors are taking advantage of social media sites. This senior trend has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. Suddenly this new technology is being sought out by retirees to stay in touch with friends, children, grandchildren and former colleagues after retirement.

Many are implementing the newest features in iPads and smart phones for personal and professional use. They are texting, uploading music, sending photos from their phones to friends and family and more.

INDEPENDENCE

A huge senior trend is remaining independent. Seniors are choosing to remain in their homes even if they need help with some of the day-to-day living challenges. The reason this is becoming so popular is the emerging in-home senior services cropping up throughout the country as demand for providers increases. Seniors can find assistance for medication administration, transportation, light housework, meal preparation, handyman work and more.
