As adults most of us didn't have the luxury of doing hobbies because we were too busy. Life over 50 is completely different, and sometimes difficult to adjust to in the beginning but finding a hobby is a chance to take up something you always dreamed of doing and allow your creative side to develope. We all have hidden talents within us so take the time to discover what it some of yours might be. Think about when you were a child. Were you a good artist? Did you enjoy showing your parents how you could sing? Did you always dream of becoming a stage actor?  By trying out different crafts you are (or were) interested in learning, you will be more likely to discover your hidden creative treasure.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT HOBBIES YOU CAN DO BASED ON YOUR LOCATION
.
If you live in states with more arid climates like parts of New Mexico and Texas, Arizona , parts of the California Desert region or Las Vegas Nevada, chances are your summer activities will revolve around water.  110-122 degree weather is just too hot to do much more than veg in cool lakes or pools. Lake Mead in Las Vegas, Lake Pleasant or other smaller lakes in Arizona mean fun in the sun with watercraft (boats and jet-skis mostly). Other outdoor activities must be done around dawn, before the heat rises above 85 degrees. The rest of the day will be spent doing indoor activities...including shopping.
SedonaArizona.jpgThe winters in Arizona are mild so outdoor activities such as bike riding, motorcycle riding, golf, tennis, hiking and more are activities boomers can experience during those months.

.MOUNTAIN LIVING
The mountains around the country offer lakes and rivers for  boating, canoeing, kiyaking, tubing and more. Since the weather isn't as hot as more desert climates, there is more to choose from during the summer months. WaterskiingHiking, horseback riding, shopping in trendy towns along with fishing and sight-seeing is more pleasant with more moderate temperatures. Winter activities include snowmobiling, cross country skiing, downhill skiing/snowboarding and indoor activities like reading, chess, scrabble and soaking in the hot tub. A favorite spot in the West, Island Park Idaho is only about 22 miles outside the west entrance to Yellowstone and a two hour drive to Jackson Hole.

KAYAKING AND CANOEING DOWN A PRISTINE RIVER
I love a slow-moving river, how about you? We took a canoe down the river near Macks Inn, or should I say up the river, and had a blast. We even saw a moose! The river that day was filled with mostly younger people who looked at us in amazement as we rowed past them. And if you have a labrador retriever, chances are it will love the water too so take them along.OliverSwims4Canoe.JPG
Some hobbies can even be an additional source of income if you want a little extra money in your pocket, others are for the pure pleasure.

Potentially, one third of our lives are spent during our retirement years. Since the average lifespan today is 78, that means you will have anywhere between 10-20 years on average to enjoy leisure activities. Start thinking about what you want to do and go for it. Boredom should not be an option. No matter your physical condition, there will be tons of choices.

Does your health permit doing the activities you want to do? If not, have you looked into other options that will give you satisfaction and joy? What do these activities and hobbies cost? Can you afford to continue or start them? All questions you need to ask yourself.

Planning for a desired retirement lifestyle with activities and hobbies is an integral part of the process if you want to be sure you will be able to enjoy your retirement. And yet studies show that as many as 60% of baby boomers who have retired or are close to retirement age do not have a plan for the lifestyle they want to have during the next third of their lives.

Perhaps you’ve been ignoring the issue. After all, when you are young those years seem so far away that they are just an abstract. You can only imagine yourselves forever young. Then, somewhere around the age of 40 or 50 you finally have to face reality. Retirement is around the corner.

If you haven’t already made provisions for your new lifestyle by then, you must take action now. You will have to sit down with your partner and talk about what you both want, and how you can achieve it.

Once you have discussed your financial situation you can begin looking at leisure activities and hobbies that fit into your budget and lifestyle. If you have a large budget and money is no object, the sky is the limit. If your budget is more modest there are still many things to choose from. Take a look at our ideas ...

Active seniors can join senior soft-ball teams. They can play tennis, ping-pong, bocce-ball (Italian bowling done in parks generally), pickle and volley ball.

INCOME PRODUCING HOBBIES:

How about collecting stamps or antiques and selling them? Garage-sales are a great place to find old furniture that can be refurbished and sold as a way for additional income. We found an old train set, including tracks for $20 that can be refurbished and sold or displayed. Digital photography can be enjoyable too, and profitable.
