A great retirement life doesn't happen on its own. Experts speak out on retirement myths, senior sex, what to do in retirement, grand parenting, retirement facts, senior health and more.

9 STEPS TO A HAPPY RETIREMENT

.Exercise Your Mind- Your brain is a muscle too! Every day, take a half hour or so for some games that will exercise your mind. Number games seem to really do the trick, like Sudoku. Word games are also helpful and fun. Write poetry. Take a class at your local college. Retirement life is all about trying new things to keep your mind active.

Continue Enjoying Sex.
better senior sexJust because you are over 50, it doesn't mean that part of your life has to stop. In fact, in a recent study we learned that more people are having sex now than people half their age!

No, we don't look like we did at twenty, or even thirty, but some things have changed for the better. So let your hair down, learn some new techniques, and enjoy yourself.  Senior sex makes retirement life a lot more enjoyable because it's all about having fun now. No kids around to make it stressful, or busy schedules that leave you too tired.

Get EngagedWe're not talking about getting engaged to be married here. We're talking about being engaged in life. .
Appreciate The Beauty In Front of You. Beauty isn’t always the most eye-catching car or sexy person you see. In fact the story of Beauty and the Beast is a prime example of that, but there are other things we come in contact with each and every day that have great beauty. This morning, for example I walked outside in my back yard and noticed new flowers on a tree. A bird visited to see if I had left any birdseed for it. The sunrise was a splash of gorgeous cotton candy pink. Take a moment and look around. You don’t even have to get in your car to find beauty. Savor it. Look for the beauty in a friend or even a stranger’s small gesture or smile; A twinkle in the eye of a child. Beauty is everywhere.

Get Out of Your Shell: Let the person inside out to play. You may have been forced to live in a big city due to the nature of your work but dreamed of a beach retirement life where you could dig for clams, fish off a dock, or run on a sandy beach after retirement. Morefishing after retirement

Perhaps people viewed you as introverted and shy your entire life but inside, there was a party animal waiting to escape. If that sounds familiar, perhaps it is time to reinvent yourself.

Be Grateful For What You Have No matter if you are rich or poor, have good or bad health, attractive or not, being content and grateful for what you have will help you enjoy retirement and feel happier than people who are always concerned with superficial things.
.
Look For The Positive In Your Live.  I’m going to use an example to illustrate this point: It is inevitable that if you are married or in a relationship the other person will make you angry, or disappoint you at times. (I’m not talking about someone who is damaging your self-esteem or abusing you. I’m talking about forgetting the tomatoes you asked them to pick up at the store or not remembering what you hinted about for a Christmas present kind of thing.)

Yes, you can feel hurt or even angry but don’t stay in that place long. You have a choice. You can either focus on negative personality traits, or on the positive. If you find yourself focusing on something negative, step back and remember all of the things you really love about that person. This holds true for everything in your life; your career, your finances, hour choice on where to retire, everything.
.
Connect With Nature. I’m a sucker for Nature. It is an amazing balm for the stresses in life. (I just noticed a small rabbit outside my front window. Made me smile.) Take a car or bike ride around and outside your neighborhood, or to a park where you can sit and enjoy the scenery. Watch the kids swing, the dogs run in the dog park.

I used to come home from work and drive my kids to the beach to watch the sun go down. It was always a race against time to see if we could get there before the sun dipped into the ocean. My husband and I still love the color of the sky just before the sun sets or the pinkish gold light that comes after a storm.
.
Enjoy Your Successes. They don’t have to be big to pat yourself on the back. During a normal day after retirement we all have our share of small successes. Maybe you played along with a game show contestant on television and answered more questions correctly than they did. Maybe you raised a near perfect ripe-red tomato, or fixed a broken hinge. Maybe you calmed an irate shopper standing in line, or made a stranger smile.

These achievements aren’t worth throwing a party over, but they are nonetheless small successes. Take a moment and smile at your accomplishment. Share the experience with someone else in your life, reward yourself by going out to lunch. It makes retirement life much sweeter when you take time to enjoy small successes.

Laugh.  Laughing is known to actually help heal your body so surround yourself with fun people and have a blast. Watch a funny movie with someone and enjoy an evening of laughter. e e cummings once said “the most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” Maybe that's why I love a good sit-com.
.
Connect With People. In so many ways, it is our relationships with people that give us the most happiness in life. Surround yourself with family, friends and acquaintances and build rewarding bonds with them. Don’t have family around? Find things to do to build relationships from a distance. No friends in the area? Join clubs, be active in your church events, and get out there and meet people.

Participate in Simple Pleasures. My husband and I were talking the other day. We were thinking about our time back in the D.C. area. I admitted that my best day was the day we rode bikes on a dirt road around a historic farm and down by the river. Out of all the things we did, that is the one that sticks with me and makes me smile every time I think about it. I love having breakfast with my husband watching the morning news…drinking hot chocolate when it’s cold outside, watching the birds gather string for their nests, and looking at beautiful cloud formations. They are simple pleasures anyone can enjoy. You don’t have to be rich and you don’t even have to go very far to enjoy them. Just slow down and take the time to appreciate ordinary events that are going on all around you.
.
Learn Something New. There is a strong link between learning and happiness. It gives one a sense of accomplishment. Take a class at a local community college. Join a club that is heavily involved with making jewelry, wood working etc. There are tons of opportunities to stimulate your brain out there. Audiobooks and podcasts are more resources for you.

FIX YOUR BORING LIFE

Before you blame anyone, take a look at what you are doing with your retirement life. Are you doing everything you can to enjoy life? Are you taking care of your health, your finances, your spirituality (does not have to be an organized religion)? Are you doing things that will elevate your mood? Are you as active as you should be based on your health?

First, you must have the proper attitude.  Make the decision to enjoy life. Wake up every day and tell yourself you are going to make it a good day.

IT'S UP TO YOU...
What you get out of retirement is up to you.
According to Charles R. Swindoll, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. …It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill…..The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day….I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% of how I react to it…”

Retirement lifestyles come in all shapes and sizes. What's good for one person may make another unhappy. And where you live has a lot to do with how happy your retirement is or not. For example, if you love the outdoors and choose places to retire that have bad climates for the activities you enjoy you will spend much of the year indoors. And if that is the case, your chances of living a fulfilling retirement life are going to be greatly diminished. Choose where to retire with care and evaluate the pros and cons. Consider the things you love to do, or would like to start doing after retirement when making your decision. If you are a social person, choosing to retire in a remote town might cause depression. If you prefer solace, living in a bustling city could drive you crazy.
