Beach retirement abroad, and links to the top beach cities in the U.S. where hot white sands meet cool blue water for a dream beach retirement.

   Belize Beach Retirement

Your retirement life could include the sound of deep blue salt water lapping gently against a white-sand shore or the roar of pounding waves against irrepressible craggy rocks and a view of the Pacific (or Atlantic) ocean from your own bedroom window.  You can enjoy warm sunny days and long walks on the sandy beach whenever the thought strikes you.

Affordable Beach Cities to Retire

Beach retirement can even be an option for you even if you are on a budget as long as you know where to look.

Our first recommendation is  a very exotic location. Then we will share a few more places that might feel more familiar.

Ambergris Caye, Belize.

Many retirees choose Ambergris for their love of the Caribbean Sea and laid back lifestyle.  Expats tell us it is easy to establish new friend here because there are already so many retirees living there.

They speak English here, and the island offers a developed infrastructure geared towards services seniors will enjoy after retirement.

Ambergris Caye is the most expensive place to buy real estate if you want to live in Belize but there are cheaper towns on the mainland where you can enjoy retirement life.

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras was the crown colony of the U.K.  until 1973. Although Belize was granted its independence in 1981, Queen Elizabeth is still head of state and English is the official language here. The style of government is comfortable to Americans and very stable.  The American dollar is used almost everywhere in Belize so you don’t have to worry about currency exchange rates.

Health care is always a concern. In Belize it is basic in both Corozal and Ambergris Caye. If you have a more serious medical problem, retirees and other expats drive 2 hours to Belize City, or fly back to the States.

I was looking online and found that you can find house and condo rentals/leases for as little as $600 per month. In Ambergris Caye there was nothing under $1,200 per month but it is a good idea to rent for 6 months before you buy.

Belize has been graced with lush tropical jungles, ruins of once grand Mayan pyramids and forever white sand beaches caressed by the aquamarine Caribbean Sea. If you live to snorkel, you can find some of the best reefs for snorkeling here.

Most retirees with a healthy retirement budget choose retirement life on the largest island, Ambergris Caye. This is where you will find expensive upscale condos, multi-million dollar homes and high-end restaurants.  You can live here on a budget of approximately $40,000 a year.

Corazol is on the mainland’s northern tip on the border with Mexico and attracts retirees looking for more affordable housing costs. You can live comfortably here with a budget of $18,000 a year. This is where most of the native people live. The Corozal district has a more laid-back lifestyle, with year-round boating, hiking, swimming, snorkeling and diving but still just 20 minutes from shopping malls and movie theaters located in Chetumal, the capital of the state Quintana Roo in Mexico. Dining out for a couple hovers around $30. Homes sell for $75,000 to $300,000, depending on the proximity to the beach and the home’s amenities. Rentals can be found ranging from $250 per month to $500 also depending on location and features so it is very affordable.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

If you have a monthly budget of $1250 you can live here with a monthly rent of approximately $500.

While this is probably the most exotic beach retirement life, it is also a comfortable, developed and friendly place to live.

Life is different here than in the West. When you go to your neighborhood  vegetable stand  you talk with the owner, and soon you are recognized and possibly asked to share a cup of coffee, or kopi.

Malaysia is the only country in this part of the world that makes it easy for foreign retirees to relocate. Most people speak enough English to carry on a cursory conversation and the medical care is some of the best in the world.

Asia in general isn’t friendly to foreigners but here they are genuinely welcomed here so if you want something exotic you might want to consider Kuala Lumpur.

Retiring abroad often comes with significant challenges and many people cannot adjust so they end up moving back to the States where they are more comfortable and have all of the amenities they are used to having.
If your heart is set on a beach retirement life,  we'll show you many U.S. beach cities that are still affordable...more

La Barra, Uruguay.

Retire LaBarra Uruguay.jpgLa Barra is a top choice for beach retirement life. It is small yet cosmopolitan without being a tourist trap with picturesque white homes perched along the peninsula . La Barra offers tons of amenities and services with more entertainment choices than many larger ocean communities.

The beaches here are some of the best in Uruguay. The cost of living is moderate with a high standard of living. This is a safe country to live in after retirement and offers tax savings for retirees. And unlike some countries, Uruguay is foreign-friendly.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta sits between the ocean and lush mountains. My family owns a condo outside Puerto Vallarta. The water is colder here because it is on the Pacific side but you can still enjoy a world-class retirement life here if you have the money. This stretch of Mexico's Pacific coastline is beautiful and the developments here range from modest to luxurious.  There are a lot of outdoor activities for seniors to enjoy after retirement. If you have an above average retirement budget you will love the international-standard retirement life here with golf courses, restaurants with views of the mountains and ocean, shopping, beaches and marinas that offer fishing excursions. Just make sure you fly in, don't drive. Mexico can still be very dangerous.

Samana, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is small yet it offers about 1,000 miles of beautiful powder- white sand beaches for the laid back life after retirement.

Tourists don’t visit most of these beaches even though they are just a few miles from the resort areas where the tourists congregate and seniors enjoy their retirement life.

Samana isn't your typical Caribbean resort town. It offers an international flavor with authentic Italian and French restaurants. How did this happen? French and Italians settled here about 25 years ago or more and developed city infrastructure and a diverse culinary experience geared towards expats who are much like themselves when they arrived and now you can be the beneficiary.

Las Tablas, Panama

You can live here on a monthly budget of $1200 because rent here is so affordable ($400 a month)panama beach retirement

Las Tablas is on the Pacific side of the country, the Azuero Peninsula. While other beach cities have gotten more expensive due to their proximity to Panama City, Las Tablas remains affordable because it will take you 4-5 hours to reach the big city.

The good news is that long-established community of Panamanians and expats will enjoy their super-affordable seaside lifestyle.  ...more info on Panama
